State Charter Board Screens Applicants for 2013-14 School Year

Utah Charter SchoolsEight applicants will come before the Utah State Charter School Board tomorrow, seeking charters to open new schools in the fall of 2013. The State Charter Board will meet with the governing boards of the prospective charter schools in a six-hour work session following its regularly scheduled board meeting.

These interviews are an opportunity to address gaps in the applications and to advise applicants on necessary changes. They will last from approximately 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The applicants include: Salt Lake Arts Academy (expansion of existing school), Leadership Learning Academy, Salt Lake Charter School, Voyage Academy, Wasatch Institute of Technology, Ensign Core Academy, Esperanza Elementary and Pioneer High School for the Performing Arts.

Enrollment figures released yesterday by the Utah State Office of Education indicate charter schools now account for 44,892 of the public school students in Utah, about 8 percent. This school year, five new charter schools opened their doors and one closed, bringing the total charter schools currently operating in Utah to 77.

The goal of charter schools is to provide additional educational options with quality outcomes for students and parents. Charter schools are public schools open to all students. They operate on public funds without tuition. They also vary widely across the United States.

The Charter School Annual Report is a resource to inform Utah’s Legislature, the Utah State Board of Education, and parents concerning individual school missions, evidence-based outcomes, along with student innovations and achievements.
