Board Supports Request for Waiver from Federal Education Act

The Utah State Board of Education voted to support the state’s submission of a request for a waiver from the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (better known as No Child Left Behind). The state will seek flexibility in meeting requirements from the Act that was offered to the states by the U.S. Department of Education. Board Will Form Work Group to Recommend RFPs for Assessments

The Utah State Board of Education requested that a work group be formed and report back by no later than April with recommendations for Utah’s next steps in sending out requests for proposals for tests on Utah’s core curriculum. Several members of the public spoke against Utah’s participation in the common core and the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium. The work group will look at SMARTER Balanced and other options for student assessments in core areas.

Tintic Allowed to Move to Four-day School Week

The Utah State Board of Education approved a request from the Tintic School District in Juab County to move, for three years, to a four-day school week.

Tintic is a rural district with great distances between homes and schools. The move will save the district transportation money. According to a survey by the district, about 85 percent of families in the district approved of the move.

Board Honors Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay/Video Contest Winners

The Utah State Office of Education annually holds a Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay contest. This year, a video component was also added. Three students were declared grand prize winners in the essay contest. They are:
