Utah Ranks 10th in Percentage of Students Passing AP Exams; Canyons, Davis, Nebo School Districts Named to AP Honor Roll

SALT LAKE CITY – The College Board today announced that with more than one out of five members of the class of 2011 passing an Advanced Placement (AP) exam, Utah ranked tenth in the nation for percentage of students passing AP exams. Utah, California, and Colorado were the only three Western states in the top 10.

Additionally, the College Board announced today that the Canyons, Davis and Nebo school districts were named to the AP Honor Roll for showing both increased participation and increased performance on AP tests for three consecutive years. For Davis, this marks the second consecutive year it has made the AP Honor Roll.

The AP Report to the Nation, also released today, showed a total of 18,508 Utah students (more than 1,000 additional students than in 2010 and 94 percent of them from public schools) took 29,851 AP exams in 2011 and passed them at a rate of 68 percent. This represents a 7.5 percent increase in AP participation in Utah and an increase of 1 percent in passage rates. Utah students substantially outperformed their national peers, who passed the exams at a rate of 58 percent, the same rate as the previous year, College Board data showed. Passing AP tests means the student scored a 3, 4 or 5 on the test, thus earning college credit.

Participation in AP exams in 2011 was up across all ethnic and racial lines in Utah.
