Legislature Honors 2012 Utah Teacher of the Year Leigh VandenAkker

Lawmakers in the Utah House of Representatives and Utah Senate honored the 2012 Utah Teacher of the Year Leigh VandenAkker on Friday, February 10, 2012. Leigh received standing ovations in both the House and Senate for her outstanding work teaching a course she developed called “Techniques for Tough Times,” which shows students how to control anger, build healthy relationships and make positive life choices.

Introducing her in the House was Representative Carol Spackman Moss (D-Salt Lake City) and in the Senate, Senator Pat Jones (D-Salt Lake City). Leigh brought her family with her to the Utah State Capitol for the event. Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction Larry K. Shumway was also there to support her, as was Deputy State Superintendent Martell Menlove, Utah State Board of Education Member Laurel Brown (Murray), East High School Principal Paul Sagers, and members of her family.
