School and district employees are the most valuable resources we have in the public education system. The objective of the student activity and club account training is to give these employees the tools necessary to recognize risk areas, the ability to implement internal controls and sound professional practices, which protect our employees and financial resources, and ultimately ensure continued confidence in the public education system.

Across Utah, there are rising concerns over accounting and fiscal practices regarding accounts for student activities, athletic programs and clubs in our public schools. To address these concerns, the Utah State Office of Education is leading four regional training sessions over the next two weeks. In these meetings, public school leaders, athletic directors and local school board members will learn best practices for handling student activity, athletic and club accounts.

“School and district employees are the most valuable resources we have in the public education system,” says Utah State Office of Education Internal Auditor Natalie Grange. “The objective of the student activity and club account training is to give these employees the tools necessary to recognize risk areas and the ability to implement internal controls and sound professional practices. This protects our employees and financial resources, and ultimately ensure continued confidence in the public education system.”

The trainings will discuss various issues surrounding student activity and club accounts including:

  • Accounting issues with public funds
  • Contracts
  • Internal controls
  • Licensure, licensed employees and volunteer background checks
  • Summer clinics and camps
  • Third party fundraising organizations
  • Utah law related to expending public dollars and procurement
  • Public employee and educator ethics

The trainings will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the state at these locations:

  • May 1, 2012 at the Weber School District Board Room
    5320 Adams Avenue Parkway, Ogden
  • May 7, 2012 at the Carbon School District Training Room 1
    251 West 400 North, Price
  • May 8, 2012 at the Iron School District Board Room
2077 West Royal Hunte Drive, Cedar City
  • May 14, 2012 at the Granite School District Auditorium A
2500 South State Street, Salt Lake City
