This week marks the last of the USOE’s 2012 Summer Core Academy sessions with the final one concluding in Monticello. The major focus of the Core Academy this year was mathematics. Some sessions, however,  included literacy in science and social studies.

Sessions were held in 16 locations including Cache Valley, Monticello, St. George, Richfield, Vernal, and numerous locations in between.

A total of 3,696 teachers attended the four-day sessions and 417 administrators attended a one-day session that focused on leading change and supporting teachers in quality instructional practice.

The academy was facilitated by Utah educators from across the state and supported by the Utah State Office of Education.

Teachers reported increased confidence in teaching the new Utah Core Standards as a result of the academy and are excited about the instructional strategies and content they learned during the summer.

Teachers were able to build networks and collaborate on lesson design that will support them through the coming year.

Administrators gained greater understanding of what is expected of teachers and students in the new core and ways to support student learning.

Nearly all agreed that the professional development was positive and they look forward to more next year!
