Math Tutoring Tips

Hello, elementary mathematics enthusiasts!

You need to be aware of a great resource available on my website. Go to http://schools.utah.gov/CURR/mathelem/Mathematics-Tutoring-Tips.aspx.

There you will see what we are calling Mathematics Tutoring TIPS lessons available for kindergarten, through grades first, second and third. The lessons are modeled on the STAR Reading Tutoring.

They are scripted enough that a paraprofessional or a parent could use them. However, they will be most effective in a teacher’s capable hands. You will notice that they are based entirely on the New Utah Core State Standards in Mathematics.

They are meant as standard specific lessons. When a teacher diagnoses a student need in a particular standard she or he can go to the lessons, find the one for the standard and use and adapt it to help the student (or small group of students) master the concept.

Remember, these are Tier Two interventions. That means that they should only be used with the 10 percent to 20 percent  of students who don’t understand the concept during Tier One instruction. If you are not familiar with Utah’s Three Tier Model of Mathematics Instruction you can download a copy on the same page where you find the tutoring lessons.

We now have Tier Two tutoring resources available for grades K-3. Please feel free to distribute them widely and use them well. We will NOT be printing them for distribution; however you are free to do so at your discretion. They do contain some hyperlinks. Therefore, if you print them you should also print the materials on the links or make them available to the tutored students on-line during the tutoring session.
