SOPHIA is an online social learning community where students can watch videos and take quizzes to supplement or prepare for classroom instruction. The site has a myriad of resources for online learning for students and teachers. Like the Khan Academy videos, these can be used to help students who need extra support outside of the classroom and may be especially useful in situations where students don’t have textbooks to review material at home.
Teachers should be purposeful about the use of these, or any videos, leading students to resources that are directly tied to classroom instruction. In some cases videos can be used to “flip” the classroom, exposing students to ideas prior to instruction. In other cases, they can be used to support students when the teacher is not available. The platform also can be used to create and record your own lessons, either just for your class or to submit to the wider education community.
SOPHIA is also an opportunity for professional sharing. SOPHIA is seeking credentialed professionals and subject matter experts to register as academic reviewers or as tutorial authors. As an academic reviewer, you join a cadre of other credentialed professionals who comment, rate and vote on quality content. As a tutorial author, you bring your talent and specialized skills to share with learners around the world.
