SALT LAKE CITY – Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction Larry K. Shumway will announce the 2013 Utah Teacher of the Year on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at approximately 8:30 p.m. at a banquet honoring Utah’s district and charter school teachers of the year at the Double Tree Hotel, 110 W. 600 South, Salt Lake City.

The announcement will be a surprise for the teacher. The 2013 Utah Teacher of the Year will succeed Leigh M. VandenAkker, a social studies teacher at Salt Lake City’s East High School.

Utah’s Teacher of the Year will be presented with a check for $10,000 as well as a SMART Board interactive white board, a laptop computer from PC Laptops, and a $250 Visa gift card from McDonald’s. The first runner up will receive a check for $5,000 and the second runner up a check for $3,000. This year’s finalists include:

  • Julie Allen, a K-6 teacher from Antimony Elementary in the Garfield School District.
  • Camille Clegg-Patch, a seventh grade science teacher from Tooele’s Clark N. Johnsen Junior High.
  • Jennifer Graviet, a ninth grade English teacher from Sand Ridge Junior High, located in Roy in the Weber School District.
  • Sara Hacken, a seventh and eighth grade English and history teacher at Orem’s Lakeridge Junior High in the Alpine School District.
  • Britnie Powell, a sixth grade teacher from the Salt Lake Center for Science Education, a charter school in Salt Lake City.
