Cyprus High School students and staff welcomed Gov. Gary Herbert and Utah legislators for a discussion on youth suicide prevention and a ceremonial signing of bills regarding student safety.
“It’s an awesome opportunity for him to take time out of his busy schedule and ask us our opinion,” Hannah Elliott, a senior at Cyprus high, said. “A lot of us have been affected by it [suicide].”
Cyprus Social Worker Genevieve Strattman said youth suicide is “a big problem” in the area.
She was thrilled to have state officials and the Governor bring the focus to a community that needs the assistance and support.
Present at the signing were parents, district officials and legislators who sponsored the bills during the recent legislative session.
The bills signed at the event on Friday, May 17 were:
HB 134 Parental Notification Related To Student Safety
HB 154 Suicide Prevention Programs
HB 298 Parent Seminar On Youth Protection
HB 318 Classroom Size Revisions
HB 103 Wireless Telephone Use Restrictions
