photo collage of minority studentsThis year the Utah State Legislature approved funding for a Utah State Office of Education Suicide Prevention Specialist position. USOE staff will establish language and model youth suicide prevention programs for school districts and charter schools.

Here’s a timely event of what is being done on suicide prevention at the national level. “Everyone Plays a Role in Suicide Prevention: Turning Strategy into Action” was hosted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration on June 27.

Guest speakers included Surgeon General VADM Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A.; Richard McKeon, Director, SAMHSA Suicide Prevention Branch; and Dan Reidenberg, Executive Director, Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.

Also on June 27, the Coalition of Minorities Advisory Committee invited Utah State University‚Äôs Dr. Scott Ross to do a presentation on anti-bullying. Here is a link to the audio of the presentation “How Aware are we of Bullying Prevention in Utah?
