2014 Utah Teacher of the Year to be Named at Banquet on Friday
Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction Martell Menlove will announce the 2014 Utah Teacher of the Year on Friday, Oct. 4, 2013 at approximately 8:30 p.m. at a banquet honoring Utah’s district, charter school, and Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind teachers of the year at the Double Tree Hotel, 110 W. 600 South, Salt Lake City.
The announcement will be a surprise for the teacher. The 2014 Utah Teacher of the Year will succeed Sara Hacken who teaches at Lakeridge Junior High in Orem.
Utah’s Teacher of the Year will be presented with a check for $10,000 as well as a SMART Board interactive white board, a laptop computer from PC Laptops, and a $250 Visa gift card from McDonald’s. The first runner up will receive a check for $5,000 and the second runner up a check for $3,000. This year’s finalists are:
- Aimee Breinholt, a kindergarten teacher at the Jean Massieu School of the Deaf in Salt Lake City.
Laura Laycock, a second grade teacher at Freedom Elementary in Highland.
Catherine Harrer Praggastis, an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) teacher at East High School in Salt Lake City.
Allison P. Riddle, a fifth grade teacher at Foxboro Elementary School in North Salt Lake City.
Stephen Van Orden, a German teacher at Timpview High School in Provo.
