Suicide Prevention Video

During the 2013 legislative session H.B. 298 Parent Seminar on Youth Protection was passed which requires the State Board of Education and school districts to implement a parent seminar on issues related to youth protection.

In July 2013, the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) hired Debi Lewis, a suicide prevention specialist. Curriculum and training were developed in July and August.

Lewis has collaborated with several districts and individual schools and has attended the parent seminars this fall. To date there have been no school districts opting out of the provision to provide the seminars.

Staff at USOE has worked with key stakeholders including, Utah Division of Substance Abuse & Mental Health, Suicide, NAMI Utah, Utah Chapter of American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, and school district personnel and leadership to develop an outline video that is available to all LEAs and licensed employees.
