Parent Seminar on Youth Protection Training

Prevention specialists from school districts and charter schools attended a Utah State Office of Education training and collaboration meeting at Canyons School District on Friday. The specialists received information and resources on HB 298 Parent Seminar on Youth Protection.

Under HB298 school districts are required to offer an annual seminar to parents with information on substance abuse, bullying, mental health, and internet safety.  Earlier this year prevention specialists attended a similar meeting that focused on HB154 Youth Suicide Prevention Initiatives.

Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy, who sponsored both bills during the 2013 Legislative Session, stopped by the training and shared his plans to sponsor amendments to clarify current statute.

Other presenters at the day-long event included Debi Lewis, USOE Suicide Prevention specialist, Verne Larson, USOE Safe and Healthy Students specialist, Heidi Alder, USOE Law and Legislation Section, staff from the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Kim Gardner from Utah’s National Alliance on Mental Illness and staff from various school districts.

Materials shared at the training will be posted on the USOE’s Preventions Program page.
