Dear Teachers and Science Supporters,

I wanted to take an opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Ricky Scott and I have been given the opportunity of filling the shoes of the amazing Sarah Young as the Utah State Science Specialist. Sarah has taken a position as the STEM Liaison with the State Office of Education and the STEM Action Center.  She will still be close by and participating in many science functions because the “S” in STEM stands for science.

I must start by telling you that I am passionate about science education and hope to continue with the programs Sarah has started like the OER science textbooks, online endorsement courses, and especially the work of developing the Utah Science and Engineering Educational (SEEd) Standards. I have been involved with these projects from their beginnings, am very familiar with them, and will be looking to many of you for your expertise and ideas on how to continue improving them. I also hope to be able to start new projects that will continue to enhance science education in Utah.

For those who don’t know me, I have been a science educator for the last 7 1/2 years and have experience teaching 7th grade, 8th grade, earth science, biology, chemistry and biotechnology. I have taught at three schools that include two public middle schools and one charter high school. Most recently I taught concurrent enrollment chemistry and biotechnology at Itineris Early College High School in West Jordan. Overall, I love science education and in my time teaching I have worked with science fair and MESA programs and if I would love to come and visit or participate in your programs when I have time.

More than anything, I want to hear from you about the needs you have for your classrooms and students. I want to be able to help you in every way that I can and am so excited to be working with you.

Keep inspiring Utah students.

Ricky Scott, USOE Science Specialist
