Meet this year’s finalists for Utah Teacher of the Year.

They are: (Pictures and names are in alphabetical order)

  • Melody Apezteguia (ah-petsa-jee-ah), a math teacher at American Fork High School.
  • Lois Faber, a music teacher at EskDale High School in EskDale in Millard School District.
  • Shantelle Ford, a fourth grade teacher at West Kearns Elementary in Kearns.
  • Gordon Reeve, a math teacher at Monticello High School in the San Juan School District.
  • Krista Thornock, a language arts and history teacher at Centennial Middle School in Provo.

A committee with representatives from the Utah State Office of Education, principals, superintendents, the Utah PTA, the Utah Education Association and 2015 Utah Teacher of the Year Mohsen Ghaffari chose the finalists from among 21 nominations sent in from local school districts and charter schools. The committee then narrowed the list to teacher of the year, first runner up and second runner up.

Utah’s Teacher of the Year will be presented with a check for $10,000 as well as a SMART Board interactive white board, and a laptop computer from PC Laptops. The first runner up will receive a check for $5,000 and the second runner up a check for $3,000.

The winner will be announced Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 at approximately 8:30 p.m. at a banquet honoring Utah’s district and charter school teachers of the year at the Double Tree Hotel, 110 W. 600 South, Salt Lake City.

    I hope that Lois Faber wins. She is a wonderful music teacher. I graduated in 1996. She was a great music teacher when she taught me and has only gotten better through the years. Go Lois!
