2017 Utah Teacher of the Year to be Named at Banquet on Friday

SALT LAKE CITY – Deputy Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction Rich K. Nye will announce the 2017 Utah Teacher of the Year on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 at approximately 8:15 p.m. at a banquet honoring Utah’s district and charter school teachers of the year at the Double Tree Suites by Hilton Hotel, 110 W. 600 South, Salt Lake City. Gov. Gary R. Herbert will be the keynote speaker at the banquet.

The announcement will be a surprise for the teacher, offering good photo and video opportunities. The 2017 Utah Teacher of the Year will succeed Melody Apezteguia (ah-pesta-gee-ah), a math teacher at American Fork High School.

Utah’s Teacher of the Year will be presented with a check for $10,000 as well as a laptop computer from PC Laptops and a $250 gift donation from McDonald’s. The first runner up will receive a check for $5,000 and the second runner up a check for $3,000. This year’s finalists are:

  • Liz Adams, a fifth grade teacher at Blanding Elementary School in the San Juan School District.
  • Valerie Gates, an English language development and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teacher at West High School in the Salt Lake City School District.
  • Gretchen Murray, a fourth grade teacher at Peruvian Park Elementary School in Sandy in the Canyons School District.
  • Susan Sommerkorn, a math teacher at Clearfield High School in the Davis School District.
  • Jody Tolley, an American Sign Language teacher at Skyline High School in the Granite School District.

WHO:                   Gov. Gary R. Herbert, Deputy Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction Rich K. Nye, Utah State School Board Members, 20 Utah local teachers of the year.

WHEN:                 Friday, September 9, 2015 at approximately 8:15 p.m. (Banquet starts at 6:30 p.m.; Gov. Herbert will speak at approximately 6:45 p.m.; teacher of the year announcement will be made at approximately 8:15 p.m. following dinner)
