In its December 9, 2016 meeting, the Utah State Board of Education:

  • Elected Mark Huntsman as the next chairman and elected Terryl Warner, Brittney Cummins, and Alisa Ellis as first, second, and third vice chairs respectively.
  • Adopted the Board’s Charter School Task Force recommendations seeking to clarify the governing roles of the Utah State Board of Education and the Utah State Charter School Board.
  • Adopted a resolution seeking a single, coherent school accountability system in the state.

Huntsman Elected Board Chair; Warner, Cummins, Ellis Elected as Vice Chairs

Fillmore resident Mark Huntsman was elected chairman of the Utah State Board of Education. Terryl Warner of Hyrum was elected first vice chair; Brittney Cummins of West Valley City was elected second vice chair; Alisa Ellis of Heber City was elected third vice chair. Huntsman, Warner, Cummins, and Ellis replace the outgoing leadership team of David Crandall, David Thomas, and Jennifer Johnson whose terms all expire in December. Newly-elected Board Members were allowed to vote in the leadership elections. Board Members whose terms are expiring were not.

Charter School Task Force Report Seeking Clarity in Board Roles Accepted

The Utah State Board of Education accepted the recommendations of its Charter School Task Force which aim to clarify through Board Rule, potential legislation and a memorandum of understanding the roles of the Utah State Board of Education and the Utah State Charter School Board in the governance of charter schools.

The Board also asked staff to begin moving forward on both Board rules and a memorandum of understanding as well as to work with legislators on enacting the recommendations.

Board Resolution Calls for a Single, Coherent Accountability System

To help eliminate confusion among stakeholders and to improve credibility of the Utah public school system, the Utah State Board of Education approved a resolution calling for a single, coherent student achievement accountability system for Utah.

Board OKs Revolving Loan Funds for Two New Charter Schools

The Utah State Board of Education approved two loans of $300,000 each from the Charter School Revolving Account for Ivy Preparatory Academy, a K-6 charter school in Provo, and Bonneville Academy, a K-8 charter school in Tooele County.

Board OKs Agreement with Occupational and Professional Licensing

The Utah State Board of Education approved an interagency agreement with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing dealing with student data related to technical skill attainment and including some post-secondary skills attainment. The agreement sets out responsibilities and requirements for the agencies.

Board Preliminarily OKs Five Rule Amendments, Two New Rules
